Other Repositories
* volatile project: repository contains updates to the stable and oldstable release for programs whose functionality requires frequent updates (such as spam filtering and virus scanning, etc). The main goal of volatile is to provide updates that are good and without drawbacks of using unstable.So debian-volatile will only contain changes to stable programs that are necessary to keep them functional.
* experimental: is not actually a full (self-contained) development distribution. Dependencies missing are most likely found in unstable. These packages are to be used at the user's own risk.
* oldstable, (also known as etch), is the previous stable release. It is supported until 1 year after a new stable is released.
Third party repositories
These repositories are not part of the Debian Project, but it contain packages that are either:
- (1) Newer/latest packages than the ones found in stable repositories.
- (2) or include packages that are excluded from the Debian Project (eg. patent issue, binary-only/no sources, or restrictive license)
Three well-known unofficial repositories:
(1) debian-multimedia.org
(2) debian-unofficial.org - as of today it still has no updates for Lenny, although Debian Lenny released about a month ago.
(3) backports.org repository contains recompiled packages from testing (mostly) and unstable (in a few cases only, eg. security updates). They will run with few or no new libraries on stable and in some cases on oldstable. It is also considered a semi-official repository.
Be caution when selecting backports mirror sites, some are for sarge-backports (for debian 3.0), etch (debian 4.0) or lenny-backports (debian 5.0), and choose only one that fit to your system.
