In this valentine's day, 14-Feb-2008, Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 (codenamed "Lenny") has announced for its official released, after 22 months of its development.
Debian is a free operating system and it come with a lot of free and open source software. So, we do not need to worry of the software licenses & upgrade issues. It is developed by more than a thousand volunteers from all over the world who collaborate via the Internet. It is very popular and influential Linux distribution and it is can be used as a desktop as well as server operating system.
Debian take long time (about 2 years) to release a new version, unlike other linux distro, (like Ubuntu, Fedora or OpenSuSE) release every new version twice year. Debian always ensure stable version for each release, but other distros are seeking for cutting age for latest technology. Also, Debian can support the most processor architecture, like AMD64, Alpha, Arm, Armel, HPPA, i386, IA64, Mips, Mipsel, PPC, S390, Sparc, it can support much more architecture that many other distros. In other words, Debian runs on computers ranging from palmtops and handheld systems to supercomputers, and on nearly everything in between - also it also install into embedded machines - like network devices.
There are many Debian machines that run for over a year without rebooting. They are only rebooted due to a power failure or a hardware upgrade. Compare that to other systems that crash multiple times a day, for example, some services are hang / no responding, unlike Linux based system which is very stable and reliable.
Debian and the free software community are very responsive to fix the security problems very quickly. Usually, fixed packages are uploaded within a few days. The availability of source code allows the security in Debian to be evaluated which prevents poor security models from being implemented.
Debian contain a total of 33 CDs for the installation. However, the first CD/DVD disk contains all the files necessary to install a standard Debian system. You can just install any additional software can automaticall download from Debian mirror sites, so you do not need to download all the CDs, unless you know that you need those packages, especially for user without internet connection.
I believe there are many people already started the Debian downloading, so this will slow down the mirror site and I will need long time to download the software :-(
