Shame story to tell for today blog - unbelievable of the trading suspended in Bursa Malaysia (KLCI) as the stock exchange of the country, due to technical hitch (hardware failure), on 3-July-2008 5:30am. The last incident in June-2000, and trading resumed in the same day, afternoon.
After millions of ringgit spent, and yet those IT people still cannot workout the fail-safe IT system, but (in this incident) the back-up system is also failed, and much longer recovery than expected, resulting Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE), was down for the whole day.
Yew Kim Keong (Bursa Chief Information Officer) said that the existing system was running on HP Non-Stop-Hardware, which is commonly used by exchange around the world. However, this time KLCI down was resulting from the failure of a computer hard disk.

Sequence of the events:
05:30 One hard disk fails.
05:35 Faulty disk replaced.
06:30 Replacement disk faces problems; triggers failure of other disk and CPU.
08:00 Over 50% of brokers fail to connect.
08:30 Suspends trading; activates backup site.
13:00 Backup site start-up process takes longer than expected.
13:20 Decides to start afternoon session for primary site.
15:15 Pre-opening orders keyed-in; connectivity problem crops up.
15:30 Unable to resolve connectivity with brokers in time; extends trading suspension.
15.47 Bursa Malaysia informed traders that the market was suspended for the rest of the day.
Trading on Bursa Malaysia resumed on 5-July-2008, and the benchmark KL Composite Index, KLCI sank to its lowest level since Jan-2007. The 19.56-point or 1.7% drop to 1,134.
