Today I have a IRC chat at #opensuse-chat channel with Jervine (one of the IRC user nickname), to discover more about the relationship between OpenSUSE and Novell SLED.
Novell doesn't exercise "power" or "authority" to control openSUSE even though it is sponsored by Novell, and Novell has actually paid to people to work on OpenSUSE. In this way, Novell can bet their future on Linux. Instead of using SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) we can use OpenSUSE in an organisation. However, openSUSE "only" has 60 days of supports, and 2 years of bugfix and security patch or updates, whereas SLED is 7 years. OpenSUSE is always has more up-to-date software repositories.
And then our chat come to a discussion about the Novell product, named "Open Enterprise Server 2" or OES 2.
OES 2 can be also known as Netware-equivalent Service running on linux, targeted to replace the legacy Netware services running on Netware O/S. That is why the existing Netware customers are encouraged to migrate to OES 2, and they have stopped selling Netware.
Some customers are happy with NetWare for it's file/print services, and have no intension to move everything to Linux, so Xen virtualisation option is available to minimise the exposure to Linux as possible.
Some of the people believe that the OES 2 naming is one of marketing strategies as nowsaday everybody is looking for software with the word "open", which means to many people, it is open source and it is free or just with a minimum fees. However, the word "open" in OES 2, could just referring to the linux that is bundled inside the package, with the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10 SP1, and may not about the open source or free to use. In fact, Novell have never claimed that their products are purely open source.
Referring the Open Audio from Novell, the OES 2 is targeting for organization with very high numbers of users.
OES2 = SLES + Network services (eg. the revised Netware)
Referring to the InternetNews.com about the OES 2 which is powered by linux, and Novell is continuing its push toward Linux with this release, which allow NetWare in a paravirtualized environment on top of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, SLES. With this OES 2 release is intended to help NetWare users migrate to Linux by providing them with the same core functionality they've been running for years.
