Recently I have discovered some new features - Google Sites - it is a wiki-structure for web page creation and it is an easy-to-use web publishing.
Initially, my understanding the Google Sites service is only available for people with Google Apps account. However, Google Apps users required own a domain name, before they can use the service.
After logon to my free Gmail account, the header used to show "Gmail, Calender, Reader, News...", until recent days, I found a additional selection (that is Google Sites). So I tried to use it and create a site to test and found out that this service has started to offered to users with free Gmail account.
I can create many sites for different subject and there is no limit numbers of pages within each sites, but 100MB is the maximum storage for all sites in total. However, If I have Google Apps account, my storage quota is maintained at the domain level with 10Gb of storage.
Google Apps Standard Edition is free (http://www.google.com/a/) but requires users with own a domain name, and it is mainly used for collaboration with the web application (such Gmail, Google Calendar, Talk, Docs and Sites). Any user accounts created with Google Apps, can have custom email address, eg. username@your-domain.com instead of username@gmail.com.
